Yıldızlar sürekli olarak hidrojen atomlarının helyuma dönüştüğü bir nükleer reaksiyon geçirir. Nükleer reaksiyonun sonucu olarak açığa çok fazla ısı ve ışık çıkar.Yıldızlar üzerinde 4000 k den 6000 k kadar ısı ölçümleri yapılmıştır. Özellikle çok güçlü manyetik alan çizgilerine sahip olan yıldılar kimi bölgelerde daha düşük yüzey sıcaklığına sahiptir. Bu sebeple yüzeyine göre daha düşük sıcaklığa sahip olan bölgeler karanlık olarak görülür. Bu karanlık beneklere Yıldız Lekesi denir. 


Güneşimiz de bir yıldız olduğu için benzer tepkimeler verir. Kimi zaman dünyadan görülebilecek kadar yoğun karanlık bölgeler oluşur bu beneklere ise özel bir isim verilmiş olup Güneş Lekesi denir.
